He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers 25 September 1922, and was transferred to the Royal Army Pay Corps in 1924. Sent to Shanghai, Egypt, and the Somaliland Force 14 June 1940, he was appointed to an Emergency Commission on 6 September 1941.
