A World War One Memorial Plaque, named to Arthur Cumberbatch.
Arthur Cumberbatch served as 26500 Guardsman with the Coldstream Guards and died on 9 July 1918 aged 26.
He was the son of Charles and Sarah Hannah Cumberbatch of Child's Lane, Brownlow, Astbury, Congleton, Cheshire and was married to Hannah and is buried within Astbury (St.Mary) Churchyard, Newbold Astbury.
His CWGC gravestone bears the inscription 'Late Of The County Police. Love And Rembrance Last For Ever'. It appears that Arthur did not serve overseas and was therefore not entitled to medals for his WWl service, this Memorial Plaque being his sole entitlement. The Memorial Plaque numbered 14 between lion's rear foot and tail and stamped W within a circle on the reverse, with a brass ring through a hole at the top to allow it to be hung.
