Harry Tolfree attested for the Middlesex Regiment and served during the Great War on the Western Front from 31 May 1915, subsequently being advanced Company Sergeant Major of the 5th (Special Reserve) Battalion. His Medal Index Card states that he was awarded the M.M. with the 11th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment; as a Special Reserve Battalion, the 5th Middlesex did not serve overseas.
